“It stung to some degree. I was very young, it was hard to read and hear so much negativity. I won the silver medal. I lost the fight on my feet. I didn’t see why everyone felt I was a disgrace. Ferdie Pacheco and folks were giving me no credit. It motivated me. All they can do is talk. In the ring, I determine what the outcome will be.” A behind the scenes look at the former heavyweight champion's life and times, The Triumph and Tragedy of Riddick Bowe chronicles Riddick's journey from the 1988 Olympics to top of the boxing world. The biography also provides insight into Bowe's abrupt exit from the sport. Complete with commentary from the boxing world, Triumph revolutionizes the way a boxing story is told, with material from Riddick Bowe himself and contributors from HBO's Larry Merhant to former world champion Evander Holyfield. Jim Lampley, Ross Greenburg, Lou Dibella, and a host of others make Triumph a must-read for any sports fan.

I just finished reading "The Triumph and Tragedy of Riddick Bowe" it's very well written and entertaining. It is very obvious that the author is a huge Riddick Bowe fan but he does try to be objective and unbiased. I was never a big fan of Riddick Bowe but walked away from the book with much more respect for him. Near the end of the book is a quote from Larry Merchant which I believe sums up Bowe's place in boxing history. Merchant said "Riddick Bowe was one of the great short-term heavyweight champions of all-time." Although I disagreed with a few things in the book it's over all a good read.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a great read that put in perspective a lot of Bowe history. Filled with great comments as well from Larry Merchant, Jim Lampley, Harold Lederman and many others. Highly recommended.
Riddick Bowe had some life. Great read
Always loved Riddick Bowe
great
Christian Vick's "Triumph and Tragedy of Riddick Bowe" is a must read for any boxing fan, and most certainly any Riddick Bowe fan. Vick has obtained direct quotes from a "Who's Who?" of the boxing industry among them famed trainers Emanuel Steward, Angelo Dundee, and Freddie Roach; long-time HBO commentators Larry Merchant, Jim Lampley and Harold Lederman; referees Richard Steele and Joe Cortez, promoters Kathy Duva and Terry Lane, judges Chuck Giampa and Jerry Roth, Bowe's greatest and most worthy opponent, Evander Holyfield, and Riddick Bowe himself.

This book gives a thorough account of why Riddick Bowe never fought Lennox Lewis or Mike Tyson; two fights that would have certainly shaped his legacy. To this day, there is still much debate about why those fights never happened, and this book solves the mysteries with reliable, inside sources.

This book is written with great humor, wit and pathos and I found I could not put it down. The reader is taken on the very emotional journey of Riddick Bowe's life; from the promise he showed as a young Golden Gloves champion, to his unappreciated silver medal at the 1988 Olympics. We see Riddick struggle to find a promoter and prove himself to renowned trainer Eddie Futch upon returning to the States. We see his steady rise to the top of the professional boxing world, culminating with his victory over Holyfield in 1992.

The reader gets eye-witness retrospectives on some of the more peculiar moments in Riddick Bowe's career, among them the ludicrous Fan-Man incident in 1993; and the infamous first Golota fight in Madison Square Garden and the riot that followed. Most moving is Vick's description of Riddick's brutal second bout with Andrew Golota. After this fight, according to some witnesses, Riddick's speech was slurred and he was already showing signs of brain damage at only 29 years of age. This book pins some of the tragedy of Riddick Bowe on Rock Newman's selection of Riddick's opponents. Rock Newman, interestingly, declined to be interviewed for this book.

As a huge Riddick Bowe fan and former DC-area resident, I have been waiting for a book like this one that describes Riddick's remarkable young life. I cheerfully applaud and highly-recommend Christian Vick's chronicle of Riddick Bowe's life and career.
I really enjoyed it. Christian Vick did a great job, and it has comments from those close to the Champ! Nice Job!
Great book! So much talent, too bad he never reached for more. One part missing, is his fixed MMA fight in Japan against Takada. I was really hoping to find out more about that fight, which turned out to be a big fiasco!
